The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State has commenced an aggressive enforcement campaign against motorists who flout traffic rules and regulations, in a bid to reduce road crashes during the ember months.
The new Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Fasakin Akinwumi, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota on Tuesday. Akinwumi stated that the FRSC Corps Commander, Shehu Mohammed, had directed all sector commands to massively deploy personnel for a 24-hour surveillance of the exercise.
Akinwumi noted that most accidents recorded in the state were due to speeding, reckless driving, wrongful overtaking, and tyre bursting, among others. He emphasized the need for robust special patrols to make the roads safer for the motoring public during the ember months.
The sector commander stressed that the ember months were not inherently evil, but rather, motorists needed to change their attitude and drive safely during the period. “We are appealing to motorists, especially as we enter the ember months, to obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable crashes,” he said.
Akinwumi announced that the corps would begin aggressive enforcement of traffic rules and regulations to reduce crashes on highways. The FRSC will also visit motor parks, churches, and mosques to educate the public on the importance of safety.
The sector commander implored motorists against taking intoxicating substances that could negatively affect their sense of reasoning, thus leading to road crashes. He urged drivers to prioritize safety and obey traffic rules to ensure a safe and crash-free ember season.
