The highly anticipated meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been rescheduled to Wednesday, August 28.
Initially set for Monday, August 26, the meeting’s postponement was confirmed by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke.
The meeting’s purpose is to address ASUU’s grievances, which include improved welfare, increased university funding, and a halt to the proliferation of universities. The union’s national executive council meeting on August 19, 2024, at the University of Ibadan, resolved to embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to honor the 2009 renegotiated agreement.
The postponement of the meeting has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to addressing ASUU’s demands. With the union threatening a nationwide strike, the government faces mounting pressure to resolve the issues and prevent another disruption to the academic calendar.
The Wednesday meeting is now eagerly awaited, as stakeholders hope for a resolution to the lingering issues. The government and ASUU will need to engage in constructive dialogue to address the union’s concerns and find a mutually beneficial solution.
