Adejuwon Soyinka, Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa and an investigative journalist, has been released by the Department of State Services (DSS) after being detained at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.
Soyinka was arrested shortly after arriving from the United Kingdom, with no reason given for his detention. He was held incommunicado, with his phone unreachable.
When contacted, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya claimed he was not aware of Soyinka’s arrest, stating, “I am not aware of the matter you have raised and have no comments on it.”
However, Soyinka was later released from the DSS Ikoyi office, with his passport seized. A friend confirmed his release, saying, “He has been released. They held onto his passport.”
