President Bola Tinubu will swear in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) today at 11 am at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Tinubu returned from France yesterday evening, shortening his private visit to swear in the new CJN. His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun, the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, to head the country’s judiciary. She will serve as acting CJN pending her confirmation by the Senate.
Justice Olukayode Ariwoola bowed out yesterday upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years. President Tinubu commended him for his services to the nation, describing his over three-decade stint as a “successful public service career.”
Justice Ariwoola signed off on the new Supreme Court Rules 2024 earlier this month to address current challenges and suit modern times. He believed the rules of procedure for any court must be dynamic and contemporary to meet evolving demands.
