Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denounced the On-Street Parking scheme, also known as ‘Park-and-Pay’, as illegal due to fraudulent contract agreements.
Wike revealed that the contract between the FCT and concessionaires NAJEC Limited and Messrs Automaten Technik Bauman Nigeria Limited was marred by an unfair 80% payback to contractors, leaving only 20% for the administration.
Wike has directed the release of a statement informing residents that the scheme is illegal and that they should not be forced to pay for parking in front of their businesses or residences.
The Minister emphasized his commitment to reducing corruption in the system, stating that contracts like the ‘Park-and-Pay’ scheme were arranged in collusion with secretariats within the administration.
Wike urged continued efforts to fight corruption, acknowledging the challenges of working with civil servants but vowing to minimize corrupt practices.
The ‘Park-and-Pay’ scheme was initially introduced in 2014 and reintroduced in 2023 with a 10-year agreement worth N908.3 billion. However, Wike claimed he was unaware of the reintroduced scheme and has since taken steps to address the fraudulent contract.
