The United States Military Veterans of Igbo Descent has called for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and a return to Nigeria’s 1960/63 regional autonomy as the only way to mitigate the country’s socio-economic and security problems.
In a letter dated September 16, 2024, the group stated that restructuring along the lines of the 1960-1963 constitution is the solution to Nigeria’s problems, citing the late Prof. Ben Nwabueze’s advice to Kanu in 2017.
The group recalled Kanu’s demands made in 2017, including upgrading Enugu airport, dredging River Niger, and reviving moribund industries in the South-East and South-South to provide job opportunities for youths and graduates.
The group condemned the Nigerian government’s actions, including the killing of 28 people at Kanu’s home, the imprisonment and killing of Biafrans in detention facilities, and the unlawful detention of Kanu, leading to the death of his parents.
The group noted that both the North and South have agreed on the need for restructuring, emphasizing that Kanu’s release and a return to regional autonomy are essential for Nigeria’s stability and progress.
