In a significant move, the National Judicial Council (NJC) is set to send Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun’s name to President Bola Tinubu for approval as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
This follows her recommendation by the NJC during its 106th meeting, presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
If approved, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, after Justice Mariam Mukhtar. Her appointment is seen as a milestone in the country’s judiciary.
The NJC also recommended 27 candidates for appointment as judges of state high courts and one Kadi of the Sharia Court of the FCT, Abuja. The candidates will be forwarded to their respective state governors and the President for approval.
The NJC released a list of recommended candidates, including six for the Kwara State High Court, one for Kaduna State, four for Benue State, eight for Rivers State, and six for Ondo State.
All recommended candidates are expected to be sworn in after the approval of the President and their respective state governors. The NJC’s recommendations mark a significant step towards strengthening the country’s judiciary.
