The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has called on security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections.
Yakubu made this call at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in Abuja, emphasizing the need to protect election materials, personnel, and polling activities.
With the Edo State governorship election just 37 days away and Ondo State’s 93 days away, Yakubu warned that any attempt to disrupt the polls would be dealt with decisively. He expressed gratitude to security agencies for their support during recent electoral activities.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Hassan Abdullahi, issued a stern warning, cautioning against any attempts to disrupt the upcoming governorship election in Edo State. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring peaceful and credible polls.
Yakubu also announced several upcoming bye-elections across various states, including Rivers, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Oyo, and others. He noted that timetables would be released soon.
The Commission has published the final list of candidates for the elections in Edo and Ondo States, with 17 political parties fielding 34 governorship candidates and their running mates in each state. The cumulative figure of voters in the two states is 4,682,086.
