The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies has scrutinized the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Nigeria over a N6 billion deficit incurred in 2023 and a N5 billion loan obtained in 2022 for the purchase of customized calculators.
The committee expressed dissatisfaction with WAEC’s responses, particularly the submission of a cashbook instead of bank statements. They demanded WAEC’s bank statements from 2018 to the present within a week, citing a lack of cooperation from the examination body.
Committee member Awaji-Inombek Abiante emphasized the need for accountability, stating that WAEC must submit all required documents to facilitate the investigation. The committee sought explanations for WAEC’s expenditure, including the N5 billion loan and the N6 billion deficit.
The committee requested various documents, including bank statements, payment records, and evidence of approval for the N5 billion loan. They also asked for details on the customized calculators’ purchase and the Taraba state office construction contract.
WAEC’s Head, Josiah Dangut, requested additional time to present the required documents, citing the need to avoid cost inflation. The committee chairman emphasized the importance of full cooperation and timely provision of necessary documents to expedite the inquiry.
