The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken a bold step to sanitize the education system by withholding the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This move is aimed at tackling the menace of examination malpractice, which has been a recurring issue in the conduct of the examination.
According to the Head of the Nigeria Office, WAEC, Dr. Amos Dangut, the withheld results represent 11.92% of the total 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the examination. This figure is 4.37% lower than the 16.29% recorded in the 2023 WASSCE.
Dr. Dangut attributed the withholding of results to various reported cases of examination malpractice, including the increasing use of mobile phones in the examination hall and organized cheating in some schools. He emphasized that the Council would continue to sanction all cases of examination malpractice, as it undermines the educational system.
On a brighter note, Dr. Dangut revealed that 73.79% of candidates obtained credit or above in a minimum of any five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics. He encouraged candidates to apply for their Digital Certificates, which will be released 48 hours after checking their results online.
The examination was conducted in four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the Council’s results website within the next 12 hours.
