A devastating fire has ravaged the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Champion Zonal Headquarters) in Kontagora, Niger State, leaving the building in ruins.
The incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 3:00 am, with eyewitnesses reporting that the church was set ablaze by unidentified individuals.
This is not the first time the church has faced such an attack, as a similar incident occurred 10 years ago when unknown arsonists warned that the church building should not be completed.
Condemning the latest attack, the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, described the incident as “barbaric and uncalled for.” He emphasized the need for swift action from the government and security agencies to address the situation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Assistant Pastor Samson Ogbebor recounted the distressing scene, stating, “On getting there, I met a church that has been in existence for the past 20 years now burnt down and properties looted by hoodlums.” He highlighted the church’s resilience in the face of previous challenges, including a similar incident 10 years ago.
Elder John Aboje appealed to the relevant authorities, including Governor Umaru Bago and the Emir of Kontagora, to treat the incident with seriousness and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. The incident has been reported to the Division ‘A’ Police Station in Kontagora for investigation.
