World champion Tobi Amusan has made a strong statement at the ongoing 2024 Olympics in Paris, qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles semi-finals with a blistering time of 12.49 seconds.
Amusan, who led the pack of eight athletes, is among the top contenders for the gold medal. However, she faces stiff competition from a strong field, including Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, Alaysha Johnson of the USA, Danielle Williams, and reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.
The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday, August 9, while the final will take place on Saturday, August 10, the penultimate day of the athletics event.
Amusan’s impressive form in the run-up to the Olympics has made her a favorite to win. She set a season’s best and world lead of 12.40s (0.9) at the Jamaican Athletics Invitational in Kingston in May and has been consistent in her performances throughout the season.
With 17 events under her belt, including the 60m, 100m, 100m hurdles, and the 4x100m relay, Amusan is poised for a podium finish. Her previous accolades, including three consecutive African Games titles and anchoring the women’s 4x100m to gold, demonstrate her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft.
As the semi-finals approach, all eyes will be on Amusan to see if she can maintain her momentum and bring home the gold for Nigeria.
