In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s parliament has been dissolved, following the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amidst violent protests demanding her ouster.
The president’s office announced the dissolution in a statement on Tuesday, hours after protesting student leaders issued an ultimatum to dissolve parliament.
The protests, which have left over 300 people dead, had been ongoing for weeks, with students demanding Hasina’s resignation. Following her departure, Awami League offices and leaders’ homes were attacked and looted across Dhaka and other areas.
In a bid to restore calm, Army Chief Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman met with leaders of various political parties, excluding those from Hasina’s Awami League party. He urged protesting students to remain patient and refrain from further violence, promising that justice would be served for the killings and atrocities committed.
As the country teeters on the brink of uncertainty, the army has appealed to the people to keep confidence in their ability to restore order and stability. The situation remains fluid, with many wondering what the future holds for Bangladesh.
