The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Malam Jalal Arabi, for questioning over alleged mismanagement of the 2024 Hajj exercise fund.
Arabi appeared at the EFCC office on Tuesday to provide explanations on how the commission utilized the N90 billion subsidy allocated for the exercise.
According to a source within the commission, Arabi’s interrogation is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged fund mismanagement, which dates back to 2021. The source revealed that several petitions have been filed against the chairman and the commission’s management, prompting the EFCC to launch a probe.
The investigation is focused on allegations of misappropriation of N200 million, with some officials already invited for questioning. The EFCC is seeking detailed explanations from Arabi on how NAHCON managed the funds allocated for the pilgrims. The commission’s source stated, “The investigation is ongoing… As of now, NAHCON chairman has been invited; he is already being interrogated by our crack detectives to provide explanations on some issues that border on allegations of fund mismanagement in the commission.”
