A devastating fire at an oil depot in Russia’s Kursk region has been brought under control, according to Alexei Smirnov, the Russian governor of the border region.
The blaze, which raged for 48 hours, was sparked by a Ukrainian drone attack on Sunday.
The attack, claimed by Ukraine’s General Staff, targeted the Polyova oil depot, which is located just across the border from Ukraine. According to the general staff, the depot is used to supply the Russian armed forces, making it a legitimate target.
The Ukrainian drone strike hit three fuel tanks, causing a massive fire that burned for two days. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to Governor Smirnov.
This attack is the latest in a series of strikes by Ukraine against Russian energy sites and oil depots. Kyiv sees these attacks as retribution for Moscow’s aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities and power stations.
The escalation of attacks inside Russian territory has raised concerns about the widening scope of the conflict. As tensions continue to rise, the international community is watching closely to see how the situation will unfold.
