Telecoms giant, MTN, has taken drastic measures by shutting down all its stores and service centers across Nigeria.
This move comes after outraged subscribers vandalized one of its offices in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State on Monday.
The destruction of property was sparked by MTN’s decision to bar lines due to a mismatch in National Identification Number and SIM registration. A viral video on social media showed a large crowd of angry subscribers destroying a barricade fence and vandalizing the office.
However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that normalcy has been restored at the scene. “This should not be the way to go!” he stated.
In response to the incident, MTN announced on Tuesday that it would be closing its shops nationwide. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the statement read.
The shutdown is seen as a precautionary measure to prevent further attacks on MTN’s properties and staff. The telecoms company is yet to announce when its operations will resume.
