The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sounded the alarm over alleged police partisanship ahead of the September 21 governorship election.
At a press conference in Benin on Sunday, Edo PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi expressed discomfort with the police’s disposition, citing instances of bias towards the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Aziegbemi alleged that the police’s actions and inactions suggest they are working for the APC, pointing to the arrest and arraignment of Rev. Olu Martins, the Deputy Director of Media for the PDP Election Campaign Council.
The PDP chairman also claimed that a petition against the APC chairman for threatening to mobilize youths to stone Governor Godwin Obaseki has been ignored, despite submitting video evidence.
Furthermore, Aziegbemi alleged that 22 PDP members and leaders are under surveillance and harassment by a tactical team of policemen.
However, Commissioner of Police Funsho Adegboye dismissed the allegations, directing concerns to Abuja.
The development has sparked concerns about the police’s neutrality in the upcoming election, with the PDP calling for fairness and impartiality.
As the election draws near, the PDP’s allegations have raised questions about the role of the police in ensuring a free and fair electoral process.
