As Nigerians gear up for planned hardship protests starting August 1st, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti have emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations within the law.
Governor Otti, expressing concerns about potential hijacking by unpatriotic elements, advised Abia residents to explore alternative forms of protest. “We have seen protests hijacked. My fears are that this one will also be hijacked,” he said.
Peter Obi attributed the protests to hunger and hopelessness, calling for civil demonstrations. “On the issue of protest, within the Nigerian constitutions, protest is allowed. All I plead for is for those who are protesting to do so within the law and in a civil manner…”
Both leaders acknowledged the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, with Governor Otti emphasizing the need for a productive economy and reduced reliance on imports. Mr Obi called on security agencies to manage the protests lawfully and advised the government to engage in dialogue with protesters.
