Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has thrown his weight behind the planned nationwide protest against hunger, slated for August 1, while emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations.
Speaking at the grand finale of the 2024 Ibadan Cultural Week, Makinde acknowledged the widespread anger and hunger across the country as the driving force behind the protest. He urged protesters to exercise their rights peacefully, without resorting to violence or destruction of public facilities.
Makinde cautioned, “Yes, protest is everybody’s right. But remember that we used your money to build all the structures and facilities we have put in place in this state, not mine. So, if you want to protest, it must be peaceful.”
He further advised protesters not to destroy government property, warning that any damage would divert funds meant for meaningful projects to replacing destroyed facilities.
