Despite multiple court orders aimed at halting the exercise, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is proceeding with its ward congresses across various wards in Rivers State.
The party’s actions are in defiance of orders from Justice Charles Wali and Justice Sobere Biambo, which prohibited the PDP from holding ward, local government, and state congresses until the court hears and determines the suit before it.
However, a counter-order from Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has permitted the PDP to proceed with its congresses, barring the DSS, police, INEC, and seven other entities from disrupting the process. This has created conflicting legal orders regarding the PDP congresses in Rivers State.
The congresses, scheduled to start on July 27 with ward congresses, will be followed by local government congresses on August 26 and state congresses in September. The aim is to elect new officers to manage the PDP’s affairs at the ward, local government, and state levels in Rivers State. The party’s actions have raised questions about the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.
