A Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Olawale Abiodun, 33, to three years imprisonment for defrauding Saidat Amodu of N3.1m under the guise of procuring a UK visa for her siblings.
The court found Abiodun guilty of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretence, fraud, and stealing. Magistrate S. S. Shotayo ordered him to pay N3.1m as restitution to the complainant, in addition to the prison term without an option of fine.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Evelyn Motim, Abiodun presented himself as a travel agent and collected the money from Amodu between October 17 and November 29, 2023, in the Ibara area of Abeokuta. He then refused to take her calls and converted the money into his personal use.
The offences contravened Sections 516, 421, 390(9), 436, and 419 of the Criminal Law of Ogun State. The court’s verdict serves as a warning to individuals engaging in fraudulent activities.
