Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has called on groups planning to participate in the proposed nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.
This, he said, is to ensure a peaceful and incident-free protest.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Egbetokun acknowledged the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest. However, he emphasized the need for prior coordination with the police to guarantee public safety and order.
The police chief outlined specific requirements for protest organizers, including:
– Proposed protest routes and assembly points
– Expected duration of the protest
– Names and contact details of protest leaders and organizers
– Measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements
– Key identifiers for potential troublemakers
Egbetokun assured that providing this information would enable the police to deploy adequate personnel and resources to ensure public safety. He also emphasized the need for clear communication channels and adherence to global best practices for peaceful assembly.
“We encourage all protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly to guarantee a safe and successful exercise of their rights,” he said.
