Tragedy struck in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, on Thursday when a heavy-duty truck carrying a container load fell on two small vehicles, trapping eight school children.
According to eyewitnesses, the children, pupils of Kingdom Heritage Nursery and Primary School, were returning from school when the accident occurred at the popular Lokongoma market.
The Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other agencies collaborated to rescue the children, who were trapped under the container.
Commodore Jerry Omodara, Kogi State Security Adviser, confirmed the incident and commended the rescue efforts, saying, “Through the combined effort of the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant agencies, the children were rescued.”
As of 5:17 pm, efforts were still underway to evacuate the truck and ensure free flow of traffic.
The survival of the eight school children is being hailed as a miracle, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is expected to follow.
