A new chapter has begun in the quest to select the next Alaafin of Oyo, following a prolonged crisis after the demise of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi on April 22, 2022.
Investigations reveal that the state government has initiated a fresh selection process to ensure the emergence of the right candidate as the new monarch. This development comes after a legal battle between the kingmakers and Governor Seyi Makinde over the selection of Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin.
The Oyomesi in Council had taken the governor to court, seeking to restrain him from rejecting their unanimously selected candidate. However, the government has opted for a fresh start, aiming to avoid further crisis.
Government sources confirm that the fresh selection process will commence soon, with a focus on ensuring the right person emerges as the new Alaafin. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, stated that the governor is currently unavailable, but the process will begin shortly.
An impeccable source emphasized the government’s commitment to following due process in the selection of the next Alaafin, aiming to avoid any further controversy. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, claimed unawareness of the development.
