The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party has announced its withdrawal from the forthcoming September 21 local government election, citing concerns over the credibility and transparency of the process.
Calistus Ihejiagwa, the party’s chairman, stated, “We cannot participate in any election organized by the All Progressive Congress’ State Independent Electoral Commission because it will not be fair, credible, and transparent.”
Ihejiagwa revealed that the party is focusing on the Supreme Court’s decision on the November 11, 2023, governorship election, adding, “And we are hopeful that the days of Governor Hope Uzodimma in the Douglas House are numbered.”
He urged stakeholders to support the party’s revalidation and membership drive across the state’s 27 local government areas, emphasizing that the Labour Party is the citizens’ only hope to vote out economic hardship.
Ihejiagwa assured that the party is healthy and stable, with no crisis, and has amended its constitution and customized membership cards for identification.
Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, representing the National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, called on stakeholders to continue supporting the party, stressing that Nigerians look up to the Labour Party to save the country from economic woes.
