A devastating shooting occurred at a nursing home in Daruvar, Croatia on Monday, leaving at least five people dead and several others wounded.
According to state broadcaster HRT, an unidentified gunman entered the facility and opened fire, causing chaos and destruction.
The suspect, reportedly a war veteran, fled the scene but was later apprehended by police. Croatian newspaper Jutarnji list revealed that the alleged shooter killed his mother, along with other residents and staff members.
Shootings are uncommon in Croatia, which fought a war of independence from 1991 to 1995. The incident is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of gun violence, which recently rocked neighboring Serbia in back-to-back mass shootings, including a school massacre in Belgrade that claimed 10 lives.
Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting and working to provide support to the families affected by the tragedy. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the country, highlighting the need for increased security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
