Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has declared his reinstatement a divine victory, stating that God used his reinstatement to prove his anointing to his detractors.
Shaibu, who was impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly following a rift with Governor Godwin Obaseki, was reinstated by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja last week.
Speaking at a thanksgiving service at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Benin, Shaibu described the court judgment as a victory for democracy and a protection of the office of the deputy governor in Nigeria.
“I challenged God to prove to the world that I am truly His son,” Shaibu said. “I told God to show to the world that those who touched His anointed would suffer consequences. By the grace of God, democracy has come to stay, and we will protect it; anti-democratic forces must be flushed out, and we will succeed.”
Shaibu’s reinstatement has been seen as a major victory for democracy and a testament to the rule of law. His detractors had sought to use him as a scapegoat, but God had other plans, he said.
The deputy governor’s fight against impeachment was not just about him but about protecting the office of the deputy governor in Nigeria, he added.
