The Presidency has accused the Labour Party and its supporters of treason, alleging that they are behind the planned nationwide anti-government protest scheduled for August 1.
However, the Labour Party has denied the allegation, describing it as “treasonable” and “anarchist”.
According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Labour Party and its supporters are spreading treasonable hashtags, including #TinubuMustGo and #Revolution2024, and planning a civilian coup against President Bola Tinubu.
Onanuga alleged that the protest organisers were also behind the #EndSARS protests of October 2020, which later turned violent. He accused the Labour Party and its supporters of lacking patience and wanting to destabilise Nigeria.
However, the Labour Party has refuted the claims, stating that it is a peaceful party and not involved in the proposed protest. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described the allegation as “delusional” and “puerile”.
Obi’s campaign spokesman, Yunusa Tanko, also dismissed the claim, stating that Nigerians have the right to protest against bad governance. “It is unfair to blame Peter Obi for the hardship faced by Nigerians. The APC government should look inward and find who to blame among themselves.”
