UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Spanish footballers Álvaro Morata and Rodri for singing a song that made a sovereignty claim on Gibraltar during Spain’s European Championship title celebrations.
The two players led a crowd in chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” on Monday, a day after Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.
UEFA announced on Friday that a disciplinary inspector has been appointed to investigate a potential violation of its rules by Morata and Rodri. The Gibraltar Football Federation had filed a formal complaint with UEFA on Thursday, prompting the disciplinary action.
Gibraltar, a British overseas territory for over 300 years, has been a contentious issue between Spain and the UK. The UEFA investigation could lead to sanctions against the two players, depending on the outcome.
