Dr. Doyin Okupe, the Director-General of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign, has clarified that Peter Obi betrayed Atiku Abubakar, not him.
Okupe stated that Obi’s presidential ambition led him to contest against Atiku, who brought him into national politics.
In a viral video, Okupe explained that he supported Obi based on fairness and the need for a president from the South-East. He revealed that Pa Ayo Adebanjo persuaded him to support Obi, and they concluded that Obi was the best candidate from the region.
Okupe denied betraying Obi, saying he withdrew his support due to Obi’s decision to contest against Atiku. He acknowledged that Obi’s interest in the presidency led to a collision course with his former master, Atiku.
Reacting to Okupe’s statement, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Osun State, Bello Adebayo, defended Obi, saying he didn’t betray Atiku as he didn’t contest the PDP presidential ticket with him.
Okupe also attributed Obi’s loss in the election to the Labour Party’s inadequate structure and lack of resources to cover a national election.
