In a historic moment, King Charles III will deliver the UK government’s programme for the next 12 months on Wednesday, outlining Labour’s first legislative agenda in over 14 years.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s vision prioritizes boosting the economy, creating wealth, and driving progress.
Starmer vowed, “Now is the time to take the brakes off Britain. I am determined to create wealth for people up and down the country. It is the only way our country can progress.” The speech, written by the government, will propose over 35 bills, including measures to control public spending, prevent utility price hikes, and promote clean power.
The legislation aims to restore mandatory housebuilding targets, renationalize rail services, and strengthen workers’ rights, including a ban on zero-hour contracts. The King’s speech, delivered from a golden throne in the House of Lords, marks a significant moment for Labour, returning to power after 14 years.
Former Labour minister Tony McNulty noted, “This is a hungry party; they are chomping at the bit to show that they can return to being what they see as the natural party of government.” The ceremony, steeped in tradition, will see King Charles III wear the Imperial State Crown and a crimson robe, symbolizing the UK’s rich history and the dawn of a new political era.
