The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in the Delta State local government election, winning all 25 chairmanship positions contested on Saturday, July 13th, 2024.
According to the Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, Jerry Agbaike, one of the PDP candidates, Vincent Oyibode, won his seat unopposed in the Udu Local Government Area.
In the other 24 local government zones, PDP candidates contested against rivals from other parties and emerged victorious. They also won elections in 499 out of the state’s electoral wards, with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) picking up a single ward in Oshimili North Local Government Area.
The newly elected leaders will assume office on Monday, July 15, 2024, under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. This election comes on the heels of a Supreme Court verdict mandating the direct transfer of funds to local government accounts, bypassing governors’ accounts. The court also ruled against governors dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
“In Enugu State, we have concluded a discussion with four House of Representatives members of the Labour Party. In Abia State, we have received lots of political party members, including former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chief Chinedum Orji and his group,” Arodiogu said. “So, we are strong in all the states and it is my utmost joy and all the joy of my executives that we will take all the states in South East and we are not looking for 25 per cent in the forthcoming election, in the 2027 presidential election. We are not looking for anything less than 80–90 per cent.”
He continued, “Our people have already realised the lies that were used to deceive us in the 2023 general election—the lies of Islamisation of the South East canvassed by our brother, the lies of the woes of the South East. So, next time anybody tells you APC is Fulani party, an evil party, they are going to Islamise you, they are going to destroy the country, tell them no.”
