A daring armed robbery at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Okuku campus, took a tragic turn when one of the robbers, known as Bob Jay, fell into an open well while fleeing with stolen items.
The robbery occurred around midnight on Friday, with the robbers attacking students in the Okuku hostel, stealing laptops, phones, and money. Regina, a student who witnessed the incident, described the terrifying experience. “They were many that came around 12 midnight. They robbed all the students in the Okuku hostel. They stabbed one student, and broke the head of another with a stick before escaping with phones, laptops, and other valuables,” she said.
The well, which has no cover, was a common spot for students to fetch water for bathing and washing clothes. However, on this fateful night, it became a death trap for Bob Jay. “Nobody knew that one of the robbers fell into the well until dawn when students went to fetch water and saw the man inside dead. They raised the alarm, and the community people came and took him out and identified him as one of the robbers, Bob Jay from Mbube, a neighbouring village,” Regina added.
The authorities were promptly notified, and they arrived to remove the body. The incident has sent shockwaves through the university community, with students calling for improved security measures to prevent future occurrences.
