The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has announced the indefinite postponement of the local government election earlier scheduled for July 13, 2024.
Dr. Joseph Aremo, Chairman of ODIEC, attributed the decision to the non-compliance of political parties with the election guidelines.
Aremo stated, “Ours is to conduct an election that will usher in a democratic government at the local level. It’s unfortunate that no single party complied with the guidelines for the election. We are yet to receive the nomination of candidates, yet to verify and release it to the public for scrutiny.”
The Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reacted to the postponement. Adesanya Olaoluwa, IPAC Chairman, acknowledged that parties agreed to the terms, but sought a meeting with the Governor. “We want to see Mr. Governor. It’s not that we don’t have trust in ODIEC. We know they can perform a credible election, but we want to see Mr. Governor.”
