As air travelers, we often prioritize comfort over style, but some unexpected fashion choices can pose a risk to safety and comfort on board.
Kris Major, British Airways’ head of cabin crew with 25 years of experience, shares insider tips on what to avoid wearing on your next flight.
“Black socks are a surprising no-go, especially on night flights,” Major reveals. “They can be dangerous, as they can make it difficult to spot feet in the aisle, leading to tripping hazards and unpleasant awakenings.”
Major also tackles the controversial topic of removing shoes on flights. “If you have light-colored socks, don’t hesitate to take your shoes off. Sitting in shoes all the time is not healthy,” he explains. However, he emphasizes that bare feet are a no-go, citing both aesthetic and safety reasons.
In emergency situations, passengers need to be ready to exit the plane quickly, making flip-flops and high heels unsafe choices. “Such footwear is not suitable for quick disembarkation and may pose a safety risk,” Major warns. So, pack those light socks and opt for practical footwear – your fellow passengers and the cabin crew will thank you!
