Rishi Sunak has stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party, accepting responsibility for the party’s crushing defeat in the general election.
Speaking at 10 Downing Street, Sunak acknowledged the public’s anger and disappointment, saying, “I am sorry… I take responsibility for this loss.”
Sunak, who will remain Prime Minister until the Tory leadership race begins, praised the UK as “the best country in the world” but conceded that the Conservative Party faced a “sobering” defeat, losing many seats across the country. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and honored his colleagues who lost their seats.
The outgoing leader extended best wishes to incoming Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, recognizing him as a “decent and public-spirited individual.” Sunak reflected on his administration’s achievements, including curbing inflation, falling mortgage rates, and economic growth.
As the Conservative Party faces the challenge of rebuilding and selecting a new leader, Sunak emphasized the importance of taking up their role in opposition professionally and effectively. His resignation marks the end of an era, and the party must now regroup and redefine itself in the wake of this significant electoral defeat.
