Tragedy struck Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Wednesday, as a final-year student, Olaoye Fabiyi, was brutally murdered by suspected cultists during his final exams.
The incident occurred when Fabiyi was dragged out of the examination hall by unidentified men, shot, and hit with a brick on the head.
The university management has suspended all examinations indefinitely, citing safety concerns. In a statement released on Thursday, the Deputy Registrar, Babatunde Odugbesan, assured students of their safety and advised them to remain calm while investigations are ongoing. “The university management has directed the suspension of all examinations previously scheduled for Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, 2024, until further notice.”
The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident and has begun raiding suspected cultist hideouts in the area. The spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that all efforts are being made to apprehend every member of the group responsible for the incident. “Our officers immediately moved to the scene of the incident. All possible hideouts of the suspects were combed and raided by our detectives, including those from other divisions in the area. Every effort is being made to ensure that all the perpetrators are apprehended.”
The Students’ Union acting President, Bethel Olorunfunmi, confirmed Fabiyi’s death, stating that efforts to rescue him by medical staff at a general hospital proved abortive. The incident has sent shockwaves through the university community, with students and staff calling for increased security measures to prevent future occurrences.
