Heavy rains and subsequent flooding have forced schools in White Sand Estate, Isheri-Osun, Lagos, to close their doors, advising students to stay at home.
The area, notorious for severe flooding, has been hard hit, with water levels reaching mid-level heights inside homes.
A school in the area sent a message to parents, citing hazardous road and school conditions. “We prioritise the safety of our pupils above everything else,” the message read. Residents are trapped, unable to navigate flooded streets, with drainage channels obscured.
Johnson Olabode, Public Relations Officer of the area CDC, expressed frustration, saying, “We’re at it again this year. Everywhere is filled with water.” Residents, like Atinuke and John Adewale, lamented the recurring issue, pleading with the Lagos State Government to address the problem.
The flooding has also affected other areas, including Iyana-Oworo, Oshodi, and Lagos Island, bringing activities to a standstill. Videos and pictures online show the extent of the flooding. Residents are calling for urgent action to address the recurring nightmare.
