An alarming surge in crimes targeting patrons of bars and restaurants has been reported in South Africa, particularly during sporting events, according to Fidelity ADT, a leading security firm.
The police have urged residents and tourists to exercise caution while socializing in public places.
Thieves are stealing mobile phones, wallets, credit cards, and cars parked outside pubs, and even burgling homes using stolen keys. The latest police statistics reveal that 66 cars are stolen daily in South Africa, with Toyota models being the most frequently hijacked. In response, the manufacturer has introduced anti-theft technology designed specifically for the South African market.
Gauteng province, including Pretoria and Johannesburg, is the most affected by these crimes, followed by the Western Cape (Cape Town) and Kwa-Zulu Natal (Durban). South Africa’s cities consistently rank among the most dangerous globally, with Pretoria, Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town featuring in the top 20 this year.
The police have arrested over 500,000 individuals in the past year as part of Operation Shanela, aimed at reducing crime. Between January and March, 547 arrests were made, and over 150 suspects were killed while resisting arrest. The police urge vigilance and cooperation from the public to combat this growing concern.
