Former Vice President and 2023 Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called on the Nigerian government to take immediate action to prevent the Northeast from relapsing into terrorism and violence.
This comes after a series of coordinated suicide attacks in Gwoza, Borno State, which left at least 30 dead and over 100 injured.
Atiku condemned the attacks, which targeted a wedding reception, burial ceremony, and a hospital, saying, “The reported attack by suicide bombers… stands condemned.” He attributed the resurgence of terrorism to the government’s “lackluster posture” and urged the federal authorities to “wake up to their responsibility” to prevent further violence.
In a statement on X, Atiku wrote, “My condolences go to the families of victims of these attacks, and it is my prayer that God grants a peaceful repose to the souls of the departed.” He emphasized the need for the government to take decisive action to ensure the region does not slide back into chaos.
The attacks have raised concerns about the security situation in the Northeast, and Atiku’s call for action echoes the sentiments of many Nigerians who are demanding greater efforts from the government to address the issue.
